In my first year of college, we were trying to build some speedometer for project as part of our curriculum. We were trying to use AVR atmega16 to program the speedo. We were not able to pull it off. We got really discouraged then. Then a couple of years later Arduino comes up and changes the ball game completely. Arduino is really unbelievably simple to use and build the first prototype with. If you decide to convert your prototype into a product, arduino is open source. You can remove parts that you dont want and add things that you want. God send prototyping tool !!
